Assailant in daycare knife attack caught

DENTERMONDE, Belgium, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- The man Belgian police think killed at least three people in a child-care facility has been captured, officials said.

At least two children and one adult were stabbed to death and up to 20 others were injured in the incident at the center -- also called a creche -- in Dendermonde, northwest of Brussels, Sky News reported Friday.

Initial reports indicated five people died. Subsequent media reports also had conflicting numbers, with some outlets reporting four deaths and others reporting three.

The assailant rode a bicycle to the facility, telling staffers he wanted to ask some questions, the British broadcaster reported. The stabbing began in a room where infants were located, and he lashed out at employees trying to stop him.

"At least 10 are injured -- 10, 15, 20 are injured, I don't know," said Peter Cleymans, director of Dendermonde Ambulance Center.

Police said the suspect was arrested at a supermarket about an hour later.
