NEW DELHI, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- An Indian fighter pilot on a training flight died Wednesday in a crash near Bidar air base, officials said.

The pilot, who recently joined the air force's Surya Kiran Aerobatics team, was on a Kiran Mk II training aircraft, when the accident occurred, the Press Trust of India reported.

The plane took off from Bidar and crashed a few minutes later in a vacant field near the air force base.

This is the second fatal Surya Kiran air mishap in the last six years, PTI said. In March 2006, two pilots stationed at the same air base were killed.
