Zimbabwean power-sharing talks break down

HARARE, Zimbabwe, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Power-sharing talks between Zimbabwean President Robert Mugube and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai have broken down, the participants said Tuesday.

Mugabe blamed Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change for the breakdown, saying its latest position differed from recommendations put forward by the 15-nation Southern African Development Community, CNN reported.

"The talks did not go very well … . MDC (has) a proposal which is in conflict with the SADC and we opposed it and then the talks broke down," Mugabe told reporters. "We will continue with discussions here at home. We shall continue to exchange ideas and see where the differences are with the SADC proposal."

Tsvangirai, however, blamed Mugabe for the failure of the talks, saying, "For us as the MDC this is probably the darkest day of our lives. I am sure the whole nation is waiting anxiously for the resolution of this crisis. We are committed to this deal but subject to (ruling party) ZANU-PF conceding on these issues."

SADC Executive Secretary Tomaz Salamao told CNN that South African President Kgalema Motlanthe has called for a summit on Zimbabwe Jan. 26, with the meeting will be held in Botswana or South Africa.
