Michelle Obama determined to protect kids

WASHINGTON, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's wife Michelle intends to keep her daughters' lives as normal as possible during their White House stay, an author says.

"The Presidents' Wives" author Robert Watson said Michelle Obama wants Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, to enjoy relatively normal lives despite the fact their father will be president of the United States, the New York Daily News reported Saturday.

"She's made references that her pet project is her children," Watson said. "She wants to give them a sense of normalcy, to not miss PTA meetings and soccer practices."

While Watson recognized Michelle Obama will have to watch her public comments during her husband's presidency, he is confident she will maintain a delicate order in the White House.

"I think Michelle will have her cake and eat it too," he told the Daily News, "and will address related issues, like drug use and racism. She'll frame her activities under the rubric of motherhood."
