BEIJING, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- A Chinese dairy company has paid $29,000 in compensation to a couple whose infant son died after drinking tainted milk, the parents' lawyer said Friday.
Attorney Dong Junming said farmer Yi Yongsheng and his wife Jiao Hongfang were presented with the funds this week from Sanlu Group Co. for the 2008 death of their son Yi Kaixuan, the China Post reported.
The attorney said his clients appeared to accept the compensation payment Wednesday in order to move past the death of their 6-month-old.
"I don't think they care about the exact amount, but they just want it to end. They are tired of being stuck in this unbearable pain," Dong said.
Yi was among the first reported fatalities from the tainted milk scandal in China last year. The infant died on May 1 after the chemical melamine in the contaminated milk caused him to suffer from kidney failure.
The Post said the company's payment was part of a plan announced in December that will provide compensation to the families of the six babies killed by tainted milk products as well as to the nearly 300,000 children sickened by the contaminated goods.
