Priest accused of theft may seek deal

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A Florida Catholic priest facing trial for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars in church money is seeking a deal, officials say.

The Rev. John Skehan, 81, reportedly has reached an "amicable resolution" which will be presented to a judge next Wednesday when he is to go on trial for embezzlement from his Delray Beach, Fla., church.

Skehan and the Rev. Francis Guinan, 66, are each charged with one count of grand theft over $100,000, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel said.

Guinan is expected to go on trial next week as scheduled. An earlier bid for probation by Skehan was rejected.

The priests were arrested by Delray Beach police in 2006, accused of misappropriating more than $8 million over decades from St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church.

Detectives called Skehan and Guinan "professional money launderers" and said they had spent money on lavish trips, gambling and girlfriends.
