WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Sen. Hillary Clinton told a Senate committee Tuesday as U.S. secretary of state she will use every tool available to keep Iran from becoming a nuclear power.
The Foreign Relations Committee opened its hearing on President-elect Barack Obama's nomination of Clinton, Democrat of New York.
"There is an ongoing policy review that the Obama administration has undertaken, but I think, as the president-elect said just this past weekend, our goal will be to do everything we can to pursue, through diplomacy, through the use of sanctions, through creating better coalitions with countries that we believe also have a big stake in preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear weapon power, to try to prevent this from occurring," she said.
Asked by the chairman, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., if any effective sanctions are available, Clinton said that the administration will only know whether something works if it is tried. She said that Obama hopes to work with both friends and enemies at the United Nations to convince them that a nuclear-armed Iran is a threat.
