WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Anti-smoking activists say they are delighted with the selection of one of their own for a top job in the Department of Health and Human Services.
President-elect Obama Tuesday penciled in William Corr, executive director of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, to be the No. 2 man at the department.
"Bill Corr has dedicated his life to improving the health and healthcare of all Americans," Matthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said in a written statement. "His knowledge, experience and dedication will be invaluable in helping President-elect Obama and Health and Human Services Secretary-Designate Tom Daschle to achieve their far-reaching agenda for improving the health of our nation."
Obama is expected to launch a new campaign to curb smoking once in office despite the fact that he himself lights up on occasion.
The New York Times said Corr worked in the Clinton administration and with Daschle in the past and is currently part of the Obama transition team.
Corr is also a registered lobbyist who has been assisting Obama with a review of the department's operations, The Times said.
