Police: Robber killed woman, abandoned kid

LONDON, Ohio, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- An unknown intruder killed a 29-year-old Ohio woman in her home before stealing a car and abandoning her 4-year-old son at a rest stop, police say.

Police in Montgomery County, Ohio, said Jenny Nelson was shot and killed in her home last week by an intruder, who made off with two computers, a car belonging to Nelson's mother and Nelson's son, William, The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch reported Sunday.

The perpetrator then dropped William off at a rest stop off Interstate 70 Friday, where Maryland resident Michael McConnell and his wife Judith came across the frightened child, police said.

"She took him by the hand, led him to our car, wrapped him in a blanket, and bit by bit the story emerged as I called 911," McConnell said of his wife's interaction with William. "He said to me, 'A bad man came into my house without knocking and shot my mommy.'"

Police told the Dispatch that Nelson's car, which had been stolen in Columbus three weeks prior along with her house keys, was found near her house the night of the deadly shooting.
