TORONTO, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- The North American Aerospace Defense Command says a 60-square-foot piece of a Russian rocket landed off the eastern Canadian coast last week.
U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Gary Ross told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. the rocket was launched in Russia on Dec. 25 to deploy three satellites, and fell back to Earth the next day.
"It did re-enter the atmosphere over Eastern Labrador in Canada and continued on its trajectory out into the North Atlantic Ocean," Ross said.
There were no diplomatic exchanges in Ottawa between Canada and Russia, the report said.
Coast guard officials told the broadcaster there wasn't any time to issue a maritime warning, as the debris appeared and fell so rapidly.
The report said the three satellites launched by the rocket are part of Russia's version of the global positioning system.
