UNION, N.J., Dec. 26 (UPI) -- A New Jersey teenager was shot dead early Friday during a Christmas party at a roller skating rink.
Jean D'Haiti, 16, of Elizabeth was one of about 700 people attending the party at Skate 22 in neighboring Union, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported. Most of the guests were between the ages of 13 and 25.
John Holl, a spokesman for the Union County Prosecutor's Office, said that a fight started at about 12:45 a.m. The dispute escalated from words to gunfire, the newspaper said.
Skate 22 has had a history of trouble. In 1997, the rink was ordered to close for 45 days because of fights among patrons.
One teenage girl told Fox5 News in New York that the atmosphere at the party made her nervous. She said she and some friends hid in a storage closet to get away from other guests.
