WASHINGTON, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Improvements to Russian nuclear security agreed to by the leaders of Russia and the United States will be completed by year's end, a report said Tuesday.
U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman submitted the Bratislava report to U.S. President George Bush, the Department of Energy said in a release. The Bratislava initiative gets its name from the Slovak capital where the two leaders met in 2005.
"U.S. cooperation with Russia to reach the goals of the Bratislava Nuclear Security Initiative has made the world a safer place," Bodman said. "I am proud of the work we have accomplished together, which has made an enormous contribution to global security. These efforts demonstrate our recognition of the grave threat posed by a terrorist's acquisition of nuclear weapons and our determination to prevent this from happening."
The report was the joint work of U.S. and Russian agencies.
