PHOENIX, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano should not sign any executive orders before leaving office next year, incoming Republican legislative leaders say.
The GOP officials said in a statement the Democratic governor should avoid any executive orders before honoring her promise to resign her post after Inauguration Day on Jan. 20, The Arizona Republic said Wednesday.
"It would be unprecedented for an outgoing governor to issue last-minute executive orders that tie the hands of the incoming administration," Arizona House Speaker-elect Kirk Adams said with the support of Senate President-elect Bob Burns. "Unless it involves a state emergency, the governor should not be creating new policies that will not be her responsibility to oversee."
Napolitano has been tabbed to serve as Homeland Security secretary under U.S. President-elect Barack Obama.
The governor is currently considering issuing an executive order that would help increase the influence of state employees' union representatives, the Republic said.
