PROVIDENCE, R.I., Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Rhode Island College teaches its social work students to embrace liberal ideals as part of its education curriculum, a student alleges in a lawsuit.
William Felkner alleges in his lawsuit against the college that while attending the Rhode Island College School of Social Work, he was urged to abandon his conservative positions and support liberal concepts to help disadvantaged individuals, The Providence (R.I) Journal said Sunday.
The 45-year-old, who began at the school in 2004, alleges the social work school focused on promoting increased government programs and other social work efforts built on liberal ideals.
Professors at the school have countered Felkner's allegations, claiming their teachings are based on the National Association of Social Workers' code of ethics. The unidentified professors allege Felkner misunderstood the school's curriculum, leading to the lawsuit.
Felkner has accused the school of discriminating against him due to his conservative viewpoint and is seeking a reversal of a college Committee on Academic Standing ethics ruling against him through the lawsuit.
A NASW general counsel would not comment on the ongoing litigation.
