FBI agents sue over explosion

MACON, Ga., Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A civil lawsuit alleges three FBI agents were injured by grenades that had been repackaged and sold after being rejected by the U.S. military.

Agents Donald Bain, Thomas Scanzano and James Milligan allege they were hurt by a defective flash-bang grenade made by Pyrotechnic Specialties Inc. of Byron, Ga., CNN reported Monday.

The agents said they suffered concussions and severe hearing loss when the grenade exploded in their car while they were on a stakeout four years ago in West Chester, Pa.

Three executives of the firm were indicted this year for alleged fraud, conspiracy and money laundering, CNN reported, noting company officials have said they committed no wrongdoing.

The federal criminal trial is to begin in January in Macon, Ga., while no date has been set for the civil suit filed by the FBI agents.

Federal prosecutors and lawyers for the agents allege Pyrotechnic Specialties sold the FBI military rejects rather than dispose of them or fix the flaws, which allegedly caused them to explode unexpectedly, CNN reported.
