Dangerous prisoner escapes in Britain

MANCHESTER, England, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A man convicted of stabbing his sister-in-law 31 times has escaped from prison guards in the English city of Manchester during an outside visit, police say.

Police have asked the general public for assistance in finding 44-year-old Stephen Edwards, who escaped from guards during an escorted visit to a Manchester supermarket this week, The Daily Mail said Friday.

Edwards was convicted in 2001 of attempting to kill his sister-in-law, Julie Tuck, and was sentenced to life in Risley prison.

His escape Wednesday came during a supervised public outing aimed at helping Edwards adjust to public life if he is granted parole after a minimum 10 years in prison.

Chief Inspector Chris Hill of the Greater Manchester Police told the Mail that Edwards could pose a risk to the general public.

"Whilst Stephen is a low category prisoner who was being reintegrated into the community, I cannot discount the fact that he was serving a life sentence and therefore could still pose a risk to members of the public," Hill said.
