BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Former Democratic U.S. presidential candidate John Edwards said Barack Obama's presidency will signal a new era of U.S. leadership.
Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina, on Tuesday told a crowd of students at Indiana University that Obama would provide the new vision for the country that voters indicated they were seeking, the Indiana Daily Student, Indiana University, reported.
"The most important thing for President-elect Obama to provide is vision," Edwards said, adding that Obama will mark a "new era" of leadership on such issues as foreign policy, climate change, the economy, the Iraq War and healthcare.
"The result of last Tuesday was not an accident," the newspaper quoted Edwards as saying. "Americans want change and they wanted something different."
Edwards said Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona lost because he "had a weight around his neck" -- the unpopular President George Bush.
Edwards made no reference during the appearance to his admitted extra-marital affair with a campaign staffer, the Daily Student said.
