YANGON, Myanmar, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- A blogger was sentenced to 20 years in prison for mocking Myanmar dictator Gen. Than Shwe in an online poem, regime opponents say.
Exile groups say Nay Myo Kyaw, 28, who blogged under the name of Nay Phone Latt, drew the sentence in an appearance before a court in Yangon, the Times of London reported.
Nay published a poem written by Saw Wai -- who was given a two-year prison sentence -- that seemed like a Valentine's Day love poem but the first words of each line spelled out "Power Crazy Senior General Than Shwe," the newspaper said.
The free speech advocacy organization Reporters Without Borders condemned the prison sentences, saying, "The authorities have imposed an extraordinarily severe punishment on Nay Phone Latt just for using the Internet. This shocking sentence is meant to terrify those who go online in an attempt to elude the dictatorship's ubiquitous control of news and information and we call for his immediate release."
The Times said Nay Phone Latt is a youth member of the National League for Democracy, the opposition party led by the Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.
