Married couple sentenced for bomb threats

COLUMBIA, S.C., Nov. 11 (UPI) -- A South Carolina couple have drawn lengthy prison sentences for making a series of bomb threats over a two-year period, prosecutors say.

Christopher Gilberto, 47, and his wife, Cruz de la Jesus Gilberto, 40, of York, S.C., were sentenced to eight and 5 1/2 years respectively in U.S. District Court in Columbia, S.C., Monday, the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported.

Prosecutors say the pair pleaded guilty in June to making a series of bomb threats between 2005 and 2007. In some cases they actually mailed homemade bombs to such targets as the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport.

The Gilbertos wrote the names of people they were feuding with on the return addresses of the letters and packages in an effort to get those people into trouble with the authorities and gain revenge on them, prosecutors said.

None of the homemade bombs went off, the Observer reported.
