Officials say EU should supervise Bosnia

BRUSSELS, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Two top officials with the European Union say the international group should take over supervisory control in Bosnia next year.

Foreign Policy chief Javier Solana and Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn have suggested that the EU assume the supervisory duties now held by the Office of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the EU Observer said Friday.

"The EU needs to consider its role in the transition from an OHR-led process to a reinforced EU engagement," a report written by the two officials said.

Slovak diplomat Miroslav Lajcak is now the EU representative of the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo and has the power to impose legislation to protect the peace process in the country, the Observer said.

The Office of the High Representative, which was created following the 1992-1995 Bosnia war, was originally supposed to cease its supervisory duties last year.
