Sen. Mary Landrieu wins 3rd term in La.

NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., targeted by the Republican Party as beatable, won a narrow victory Tuesday over state Treasurer John Kennedy.

Landrieu, who squeaked through in her first two Senate races, survived a demographic disadvantage -- the removal of thousands of Democrats from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.

Kennedy ran for the Senate and lost four years ago as a Democrat. Landrieu used her opponent's change of parties to her advantage, disparaging him as "one confused politician."

Landrieu, the daughter of former New Orleans Mayor Moon Landrieu, outpaced Kennedy in fundraising. During the campaign, she touted her ability to work with Republicans as well as Democrats and said she would be able to get Louisiana more funding for hurricane reconstruction than a newcomer to the Senate could.
