RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Incumbent U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., Tuesday lost her re-election bid, losing to Democratic challenger Kay Hagan.

A large early turnout of African-American voters in North Carolina provided an indication Sen. Barack Obama's campaigning for the White House paid off for Hagan, a state senator, ABC News reported.

"This is an example of a Democratic senator riding on Obama's coattails," said Jennifer Duffy, senior editor at the non-partisan Cook Political Report. "At least 500,000 early voters have been African-American, and Elizabeth Dole isn't getting those votes."

Also hurting Dole was a negative ad campaign released just days before the election that referred to Hagan as "godless," and suggested the Democrat received money from the "Godless Americans." The television ad featured a voice-over by a woman with a voice close to Hagan's saying, "There is no God."
