Democrat Markell wins Del. governor's race

DOVER, Del., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Democrat Jack Markell trounced Republican Bill Lee Tuesday to become governor of Delaware.

Markell, the state treasurer, had more than 70 percent of the vote with 84 percent of precincts counted, The Wilmington (Del.) News Journal reported.

The outcome was hardly a surprise, the Bethany Beach Wave said. Lee, a retired judge from Rehoboth Beach, was drafted by the Republican Party when no one else was willing to run.

Markell is the third successive Democratic governor in Delaware, succeeding Tom Carper and Ruth Ann Minner.
