Zimbabwe accused of misusing health funds

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- A global health organization says the government of Zimbabwe misappropriated $7.3 million it received to fight killer diseases.

The inspector general of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria says the government of President Robert Mugabe spent the donation on other things and has failed to reimburse the organization, The New York Times reported Monday.

Inspector General John Parsons said the action by Mugabe's government has deprived his organization of needed resources and damaged efforts to expand life-saving treatment.

Parsons would not specify what Zimbabwe spent the money on.

He said Zimbabwe officials told him they have been unable to repay the $7.3 million because they don't have enough foreign currency.
