WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Pollsters for John McCain's campaign indicate the Arizona Republican is catching his Democratic rival and the election may be too close to call next week.
McCain's campaign released a memo by pollster Bill McInturff stating the senator "has made impressive strides over the last week of tracking," The Hill reported.
McInturff said the race against Democrat Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois in both red and blue states is closer than is perceived, indicating "the campaign is functionally tied across the battleground states … with our numbers improving sharply over the last four tracks."
He said the campaign is watching Obama's level of support and the gap between the two candidates.
When polls begin to close in a week, a group of states could indicate how long Americans will have to wait until a new president has been determined, the Washington political publication said.
The states The Hill identified as the ones to watch are Virginia, Indiana and Georgia. Obama seems poised to win Virginia and could take Indiana, where he held a slim lead over McCain in RealClearPolitics' average of polls. Polling also indicates Obama is closing in on McCain in Georgia.
