Divers recover bodies from sunken ferry

MANILA, Philippines, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Divers recovering bodies from a sunken ferry in the Philippines say it's unlikely they will find anywhere near the 515 people still reported missing.

The MV Princes of the Stars capsized and sunk four months ago off Sibuyan Island during Typhoon Frank.

Divers had halted recovery of bodies since then because a consignment of the highly toxic pesticide endosulfan needed to be removed from the ship, the Philippine Daily Enquirer reported Monday.

Retrieval operations resumed Sunday with divers bringing 23 bodies from the sunken hull to the MV Tacloban Princess, where investigators were to begin identifying the remains through DNA samples, the Enquirer said.

Of the estimated 800 people originally on board the ferry, fewer than 60 survived while about 300 bodies were recovered from the water in the days after the storm.
