CHESHIRE, England, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Five people in a car, all believed family members, burned to death in a fiery crash on Britain's M6 motorway, officials said Tuesday.
Three unidentified young children and two adults were in a car that was incinerated Monday night in Cheshire, England, after it collided with another vehicle in an accident believed to have been triggered by a truck driver, The Times of London reported.
In all, six people died on the M6 Monday, authorities said. An earlier accident in which a man was killed in rainy conditions created traffic tie-ups that were a contributing factor in the second crash.
The Times quoted Cheshire police as saying a 46-year-old Portuguese truck driver who works for a Spanish company was arrested on suspicion of causing the second accident, which investigators said looked like a "war zone."
"There was the utter devastation of this vehicle and five people killed," Inspector Brian Rogers told the newspaper. "I feel so sorry for the officers from the emergency services who had to deal with it. Clearly there is a welfare need for them because they will be traumatized and shocked, and also for the family."
