Cuba, Russia to cooperate on development

HAVANA, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Russia says it will help Cuba renovate its transportation infrastructure as well as rebuilding its energy sector and adding oil tankers.

Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Stanislav Naumov said Tuesday in Havana that his country is willing to assist Cuba in many aspects of its economy, such as participating in joint economic ventures, replacing its car and bus fleet and providing passenger jets, RIA Novosti reported.

"There are gaps in bilateral relations that need to be bridged, such as aircraft for internal flights," Naumov told the news agency following Cuba's Days of Russia celebration. "Russia has created a United Shipbuilding Corporation to meet its demand for tankers and we can propose similar projects to the Cuban side."

Naumov also said Russia would help Cuba modernize its energy system, creating opportunities for Russian equipment suppliers and its machine-building sector.
