Smeaton became a hero in Scotland in June 2007 when he wrestled with a man who had driven his car into the airport entrance and set himself on fire.

Smeaton received the Queen's Gallantry Medal, one of the highest civilian honors for bravery, and was publicly praised by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and other high-ranking officials for his courage and quick-thinking, the Telegraph reported.
