NEWMARKET, Ontario, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Jail has been recommended for a famed Canadian jockey who never relinquished British citizenship and who killed a woman in a 2006 drunken driving crash.
In Newmarket, northeast of Toronto, Crown prosecutors asked that David Clark, 54, be sentenced to at least three years in jail after he pleaded guilty in April to impaired driving causing bodily harm and impaired driving causing death, the Toronto Sun reported.
A 34-year-old school teacher was fatally injured in the head-on crash. Her mother rushed to the scene and held her daughter as she died, the court heard.
As a longtime Canadian resident, Clark won the Queen's Plate in 1981 and 1985 and he has won purses of more than $65 million in more than 2,600 victories.
Because he retained his British citizenship, it's possible Clark could face deportation after serving his sentence, the Sun said.
Defense lawyer David Humphrey argued any jail term of more than two years would strip Clark of the right to appeal deportation.
No date for sentencing was immediately announced.
