RAMALLAH, West Bank, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Political elements within the Palestinian Fatah movement are dissatisfied and advocate a third intifada, or armed struggle, against Israel, officials say.
The movement's armed wing is in favor of focusing on battling the militant Hamas Palestinian faction and preventing it from extending its control from Gaza to the occupied West Bank, intelligence officials told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz Monday.
But, they say, some younger Fatah political leaders are incensed over the actions of militant Jewish West Bank settlers and frustrated by the pace of peace talks between Israel and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. They want to relaunch a struggle against Israel with a third intifada, the newspaper said.
Typical of the dissatisfied group is Kadoura Fares, a key Fatah leader from the generation younger than Abbas, who has called on Abbas to halt the talks with Israel immediately. Fares made the statement at a conference on the Geneva Initiative in Tel Aviv, saying it was "inconceivable" to keep talking with Israel while construction in the settlements continued.
Still, citing unnamed intelligence officials, the newspaper said it's unlikely a new intifada would be launched while the Palestinian public is recovering from the suffering caused by the last round.
