UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- The U.N. Security Council and Germany have agreed on a U.N. resolution calling on Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program, diplomatic officials said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the draft does not call for new sanctions, but is "a very simple resolution, which will confirm all previous Security Council decisions and urge Iran to comply with them," RIA Novosti, the Russian news and information agency, reported.
He said the document, drafted during a meeting of foreign ministers from China, France, Russia, the United States, Britain -- the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council -- and Germany, would be adopted "very soon."
The United States, Britain and France have been urging a new round of sanctions to increase pressure on Iran for its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment, the Novosti said. Russia and China resisted new sanctions.
Vitaly Churkin, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, said the council could vote on the draft as early as Saturday.
Iran maintains its nuclear program is peaceful and designed to produce energy. The United States and other Western countries said they believe the program is to develop nuclear weapons.
