COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Sri Lankan troops killed 48 members of the Tamil Tigers rebel group while suffering four casualties near the city of Kilinochchi, the military says.
The military said the ongoing government attempt to gain control of the rebel stronghold at Kilinochchi resulted in 52 total deaths Thursday and the capture of nine rebel bunkers, the Colombo Page said Friday.
While the clashes in and around the city resulted in dozens of deaths Thursday, an additional 11 Tamil Tigers were killed by government troops near the town of Welioya. Two additional rebel bunkers were destroyed in the Welioya conflict, while three Tiger militants were killed in the town of Vavuniya. the Page said.
Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry confirmed Friday that at least 20 more rebels were killed this week during an attack by Sri Lankan Air Force MI-24 helicopters.
The Press Trust of India said the attack Thursday night in Jaffna caused significant damage to a Sea Tiger base and the Tamil Tigers organization.
