LACKAWANNA, N.Y., Sept. 25 (UPI) -- A 19-year-old New York woman accidentally caused the death of her newborn daughter shortly after the child's birth, her attorney alleges.
Attorney Robert N. Convissar said his client, Alicia Zebrun, had been swaddling her newborn child when she allegedly became convinced the infant had stopped breathing. Convissar alleged his client panicked and hid the child's body in a shoe box that she left in Buffalo, N.Y., The Buffalo News reported Thursday.
"I think it's more a tragedy than a crime," Convissar said. "But it is a terrible crime."
Convissar also alleged his client never knew she was pregnant until she went into labor at her family's home last week.
He told the News his client, who is facing criminal charges in the infant's death, has been in a "very bad mental situation" since the Sept. 17 incident.
"She is upset," he said. "She is sad. She is crying. She is remorseful. She is in a very bad mental situation regarding her baby. Not for herself, but for her baby."
