Bear shot after biting deputy

MOUNT GILEAD, Ohio, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Authorities in Morrow County, Ohio, said a deputy shot and killed a 500-pound black bear that had bit him on the leg.

Authorities said the bear, which was owned by Shane Mayberry, 37, had been a pet since 2003 and had a history of running loose -- as well as a recent history of aggressive behavior -- the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch reported Monday. The animal was shot by Deputy Stuart Mattix, who had been given permission to shoot the bear if it attacked, after it bit him in the leg.
