Man detained in U.K. double slaying

BIRMINGHAM, England, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- British police say they have detained a man in connection with a stabbing attack in a Birmingham apartment that left two women dead.

Police weren't revealing details Wednesday about the young man who was arrested while attempting to board a ferry at Dover but they told reporters they believe he is connected to the slayings.

"We believe that the arrested man may be known to the victims," said Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Mirfield, the lead detective in the investigation.

The Times of London said the crime scene discovered Monday night in a luxury apartment building was horrific. The newspaper said the two roommates had apparently been stabbed multiple times in what Mirfield described as a "sustained and violent attack."

There was no indication that they had been restrained during the attack, he said. "There was a substantial amount of blood inside many of the rooms."
