Group: Australians drugged at Olympics

SYDNEY, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- The Australian Olympic Committee says that several members of the Australian Olympic team were drugged while in Beijing.

The Olympic group said unknown substances were slipped into the drinks of several Australian athletes while they were celebrating the end of their involvement in the Beijing Olympic Games, the Sydney Morning Herald said in its Thursday edition.

AOC spokesperson Mike Tancred said concerns regarding potential drink spiking at a Beijing nightclub began when an unidentified Australian athlete fell ill during the Games.

"One athlete in particular thought she had her drink spiked in a bar and then word went out that maybe we shouldn't frequent that bar," Tancred said.

"It was fairly early on, but she had finished competition and that was the only reason she was in a bar. She was ill for a couple of days and confined to bed."

Tancred confirmed there were other similar incidents during the recent Olympic Games, but would not identify those athletes allegedly targeted in the Beijing incidents, the Herald reported.
