In mainland China, officials in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces evacuated more than 170,000 people from low-lying coastal regions as the typhoon approached.

The coming of Sinlaku triggered a rare meteorological event known as the foehn phenomenon, wherein warm, dry winds swept through Taiwan's Taitung County, Xinhua said.
