Police: Con man pretended to be NBA star

LONG BEACH, Calif., Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A 43-year-old man who was arrested in Long Beach, N.Y., defrauded others by pretending to be former NBA star Kenny Anderson, police said.

Long Beach police say that Michael Anderson allegedly identified himself as the former New Jersey Nets standout to others in order to convince them to loan him money for a locksmith, Newsday reported Wednesday.

Police allege that after convincing his targets to give him money to help him get his keys out of his car, Anderson would leave and never repay the debts.

A would-be victim of Anderson's helped police catch the alleged con man Tuesday after he recognized the fictional tale of woe and contacted authorities. Police officers arrested Anderson after a search of the surrounding area.

Newsday said as authorities search for additional victims of the alleged con man, Anderson will face charges of petty larceny, second-degree scheme to defraud and third-degree identity theft.
