DETROIT, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A woman who escaped in 1976 from the Michigan prison where she was serving time for a drug sale faces no additional time for the breakout, a judge ruled.
Susan LeFevre was living in California as Marie Walsh when she was arrested in March. She had built a new life for herself.
At a hearing Tuesday, Wayne County Circuit Judge Leonard Townsend offered LeFevre a probationary sentence if she entered a guilty plea to the escape, the Detroit Free Press said. She must finish her prison term.
LeFevre, 54, had served only 14 months of a 10-year to 20-year sentence when she escaped. Her lawyer is seeking to get the term reduced, arguing it was excessive for her crime, selling 3 grams of heroin to an undercover state trooper.
If LeFevre had been convicted at trial of escape, she could have been sentenced to five more years. She will be eligible for parole in the drug case in 2013.
Supporters say LeFevre, who married and raised three children in California, believed when she pleaded guilty to the drug charge she would get probation because she was a first-time offender.
