European Union may investigate S. Ossetia

AVIGNON, France, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said Saturday the European Union may investigate the conflict in the Georgian region of South Ossetia.

The French official said the international organization wants an international inquiry into the confrontation that began when Georgia began military actions against the breakaway region last month, RIA Novosti reported.

"We are for an international probe," Kouchner said following a EU foreign ministers meeting. "We need to know who is responsible for unleashing the conflict."

He also said the European Union would not react to Russia's subsequent military incursion by imposing sanctions against the country.

RIA Novosti noted the call for an investigation comes in the wake of Russia's official recognition of both South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent lands.
