DENVER, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The race for America's future is more important than presidential or congressional contests, former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner told Democratic delegates Tuesday.
"With the right vision and the right leadership ... there is no nation that we can't out-hustle or out-compete," Warner told the Democratic National Convention during his keynote address. "America has never been afraid of the future and we shouldn't start now."
The United States needs a president who understands the world today and what the future may hold, Warner said, and that president is Barack Obama, the Illinois senator set to accept the party's nomination Thursday.
"This election is about the future versus the past," and Obama has the necessary vision, said Warner, who is seeking a Senate seat.
Education, safe neighborhoods, quality healthcare and energy all would be addressed by Obama, as well as America's international status as a leader.
"Look at America's standing in the world," Warner said. "If we rebuild military and alliances, we can rally the world and defeat terrorism and restore America's leadership."
"This race is all about the future. And that's why we must elect Barack Obama as our next president, because the race for the future ... will be won when old partisanship gives way to new ideas, when we put solutions over stalemate, and when hope replaces fear."
