HARARE, Zimbabwe, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Zimbabwe opposition leaders say Monday's arrest of two members of their MDC party could end attempts to form a power-sharing government.
MDC leaders condemned the arrest of two parliamentarians and Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's unilateral appointment of three senators and eight governors, ZimOnline, the Zimbabwe independent news agency reported.
The arrest of Eliah Jembere and Sure Mudiwacame just hours before the first meeting of Parliament, said Nelson Chamisa, an MDC spokesman.
"Clearly they have chosen the path of arrogance," Chamisa said of Mugabe and his ruling ZANU PF party. Chamisa called the arrests a desperate bid to block the MDC from winning
speakership of Parliament.
Talks to form a power-sharing government have been stalled because MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and Mugabe disagree on which one of them should wield greater power in a unified government, ZimOnline reported.
