Suspect hires new lawyers to seek death

CARNATION, Wash., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- A woman accused of killing six people at her parents' Carnation, Wash., home has replaced lawyers who tried to keep the death penalty off the table.

Michele Anderson, 29, previously stated publicly that she wants to be executed for the Christmas Eve slayings, which included the deaths of Anderson's parents and two children, and took issue with her legal team's attempts to investigate her mental health as a means of convincing prosecutors not to seek the death penalty, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Thursday.

Anderson fired public defenders Kevin Dolan and Cindy Arends after they told the court that they believed their client to be mentally ill. She hired lawyers Stephan Illa and Lisa Mulligan to replace them.

Prosecutors are expected to announce whether they have decided to seek the death penalty in the case by Sept. 19.

Anderson and her boyfriend, Joseph McEnroe, 29, have both been charged with six counts of aggravated murder for the Dec. 24, 2007, incident.
