Egyptian woman delivers sextuplets

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- A 27-year-old Egyptian woman who underwent fertility treatments has given birth to sextuplets in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.

Doctors at El-Shatbi Hospital say the four boys and three girls entered the world weighing between 2.3 pounds and 4 pounds, The Scotsman reported Monday.

Their mother, Ghazala Khamis already has three daughters and was desperate to add a son to the family when she decided to undergo fertility treatments to improve her chances of having a boy.

“This is a very rare pregnancy -- something I have never witnessed over my past 33 years in this profession,” said Dr. Emand Darwish, who delivered the babies Saturday.

The sextuplets' father is a farm worker who earns about $4 a day when he is employed.

Egypt’s health minister has promised to give the babies free milk and diapers for two years.
