BEDFORD, Texas, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Police say a Texas man who allegedly threw his 20-month-old toddler from a third-story air vent told them he was trying to escape from an assailant.

Jimmy Jackson of Bedford, Texas, was charged with suspicion of injuring a child last Sunday after he dropped his son into some bushes outside his apartment complex.

Police told the Fort Worth (Tex.) Star-Telegram Tuesday that Jackson, 23, claimed he crawled into an air vent to hide from an unidentified attacker.

Jackson also informed officers he had been taking methamphetamine and had not slept for two days.

The toddler suffered minor injuries and was placed in the care of social workers, the newspaper said.
