NEEDLES, Calif., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A homemade plane collided with a moving vehicle on a California freeway Tuesday, killing the pilot, federal officials said.

The crash occurred about 8 a.m. along westbound Interstate 40 about 10 miles outside of Needles, the Riverside (Calif.) Press-Enterprise reported.

"We have one fatality aboard the plane, unknown injuries on the ground," Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said. "It was a forced landing -- an emergency landing on the freeway."

Gregor said the plane was a Titan Tornado, which is sold as a build-it-yourself kit.
