The victims were a woman from Kiev, Ukraine, and a man from Rostov-on-Don, The New York Times reported. The bomb went off just after 10 a.m. local time.

Inna Biryukova, a spokesman for the Prosecutor General's Office, said six adults and two children were injured, the Novosti news agency reported. She said one of the victims was seriously hurt.

Sochi became a popular resort under Josef Stalin, who had a dacha there. The area is known for both summer and winter sports, and former President Vladimir Putin often came there to ski.

Russia plans to spend billions of dollars on renovations to the area for the Olympics.
