Report: Suspect watched bomb carnage

ISTANBUL, Turkey, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- A suspect in a June bomb attack in Istanbul has confessed to setting off the bombs and watching the destruction they caused, police said.

The suspect was identified as Huseyin Tureli, an alleged separatist who trained in PKK camps in Iraq, Hurriyet daily said Sunday. Police have determined that the June 27 bombings, which killed 17 people and left more than 150 injured, were carried out by the PKK, Interior Minister Besir Atalay said.

Tureli was one of eight suspects who appeared in an Istanbul court Saturday.

He confessed to placing the bombs in a crowded street and setting them off with a cell phone, Hurriyet said. He told police he and five accomplices watched the chaotic and deadly scene for 20 minutes after the second blast before walking away.

Investigators used telephone records and security camera footage to identify the suspects, Hurriyet said.
