Family to sue over police shooting

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The wife and daughter of a Los Angeles postal worker killed by police said Friday they had made a wrongful death law claim against the city of Inglewood, Calif.

Kevin Wicks, 38, was killed July 21 when he opened his apartment door to police. Wicks allegedly pointed a gun at officers responding to a domestic violence call.

Angela Powell, a lawyer representing the Wicks family, said a notice of claim, required before suing a government agency, was filed Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday. Powell said the claim is for $25 million.

The shooting has sparked outrage in the community where it occurred. The officer who shot Wicks, Brian Ragan, was involved in a shooting in May in which three unarmed men were shot and one of them was killed.

Wicks's relatives say police went to the wrong apartment and knocked on his door after midnight the night he was killed. They have said if Wicks had a gun it was because he lived in a dangerous neighborhood.

Powell said she hopes publicity about the lawsuit will lead to an investigation by the Los Angeles County district attorney.
